Beyond Baylor

Discovering Phage one Phage at a time

Finished!

Well, the final is over and summer begins! It’s hard to believe we’re finished!
The Maize presentations were really great! It was great to see what each person had found and to see the unique presentation styles of everyone!
I hope everyone has safe travels home and a great summer! Thanks for a great year!

Working on the Functional Annotations

Yesterday in lab, my group worked feverishly on our presentation for lab on Thursday! We ended up getting a lot done! Our group only had 3 genes with functions overall which made it easy to pick the genes for the presentation! I think it will be interesting to see what other groups found tomorrow!
Other than that, Dr. Adair suggested we blog about our Easter. I went home to St. Louis for Easter with my family. It was a lot of fun but the weather wasn’t too great! On Friday, a large tornado hit Saint Louis and messed the airport up pretty bad. The picture below is from the airport on Saturday. Somehow, they managed to have it cleaned up and reopened in time for my flight on Monday!

Finishing up with Benedict!

Today in lab Chelsea and I were able to finish our functional annotations. It felt weird turning them in because it felt like we didn’t do a whole lot on some of the genes. Our section fell towards the end of Benedict so many of our genes had no match, no conserved domains, or poor matches on Blast. Overall, I think we found 2 genes with known functions.
I’m excited to do a bit of research with the corn genes. It will be neat to search for the genes and to get solid results when we compare the sequences against other sequences.

Finishing the Functional Annotations

Yesterday in lab, Chelsea and I continued working on our functional annotations.  Unfortunately, Phamerator was not working correctly last time we worked on the annotations (a few weeks ago), so we now have to go back and find the Pham numbers for each of the genes.  This seems pretty simple but because we are working in the Virtual Box we have run into a couple of problems like opening documents and not being able to edit them without saving them in the Virtual Box first.

Overall, it will be interesting to compile all of the annotations and see if Benedict has anything special about it!

Presenting Our Posters

Today actually turned out to be a pretty enjoyable day in lab. I didn’t know what to think about the style of presentations at first but it ended up being a bit easier than I expected. Still, I was afraid I would say something wrong and lose points for my group… Ah well. But, presenting today did help me feel more relaxed about tomorrow’s URSA presentations! I’m excited to introduce people to our class and the work we have been doing all year!

Finishing the Poster

It was great to see our poster finally come together in lab today! Today in lab, we finished our discussion and developed a results section. Then, after a shifting and resizing some things, we were ready to print! I can’t wait to see how the other posters turned out and I look forward to our presentations!

Working on Posters

Today was a nice change in lab. My group is making a poster based on the experiments from last semester and so far it is going well! By dividing up the sections of the poster, we were able to finish the introduction and procedure!
I’m excited to see how the finished product turns out and to see how the other groups decide to present the information!

Moving Faster in Lab

Today in lab, Chelsea and I were able to move much faster than last Thursday. Overall, we ended up finished 5 more of the genes which was good considering the fact that it took about 20 minutes for Phamerator to open…
I’m interested in seeing what the poster will involve. I’ve never made a scientific poster before but the ones I see in the BSB look pretty neat.

A Busy Lab Period

Thursday in lab was very busy yet I felt like I didn’t get much done. From problems with how to save our files to issues with copy and paste, the computer-within-a-computer virtual box was starting to become frustrating.
After lab period, Chelsea and I (we had numerous overlapping genes) had annotated two genes with a function. Hopefully, we’ll be able to move a little faster next time!

Working with the Phamerator

Today in lab, we started using Phamerator to look at the functions of the genes we annotated. It was a nice change from the annotations we had been working on but working within the virtual box can get frustrating at times. The virtual box is too tall for the computer screen so we constantly are scrolling up and down and side to side in order to see the programs.
It was nice to see that the HHMI annotators thought our gene calls looked good. I’m excited for the video conference thing we will be doing in two weeks.
