It’s the last day of lab and I’m really sad.

It’s been an entire year of spending time in lab twice a week… The fact that it is quickly coming to an end is really upsetting!

But, I’m excited to give a final presentation today! I can’t wait to see what everyone has found in the genome of Benedict :)

The poster is FINISHED!!!!

I literally can not wait to see everyone else’s posters and to finally present. I know that everyone in our class has worked really hard and I’m so excited to see the final result!

Oh Boy! This poster is going to be challenging, to say the least. But I’m excited that at the end, we will have something to show for all of our work.

I can’t wait to see the final products from everyone.

Once again, Dr. Gibbon was correct!

After my first gene call annotation, I thought I was going to die… I thought it was unbelievably confusing! Yet, as I continued, it kept getting easier.

The annotation template was SO helpful! I knew I just had to make it through those checkpoints, fill in the information, and I was homefree!

So, now I am almost done with all of my gene annotations and I am thrilled. Everything gets a bit easier after a little practice. :)

Cheesy title, I know. But I’m getting excited to get back to the lab tomorrow.

Since I missed last Thursday, I do not know all of the final gene calls just yet, so I’m looking forward to finding out what we will be doing with them.

Comment back if you’re also excited!

I hope y’all had AMAZING an amazing spring break!!!!

As I was cleaning out my folders today, I found the article Dr. Gibbon asked the class to read. It just made me think over it and realize how much I enjoyed reading it and how it slightly changed my outlook on this class.

After working on the presentations, annotating Benedict’s genome for what seems like HOURS, and trying to comprehend the lab manual, it finally all makes sense. It’s supposed to be hard, it supposed to be confusing, and most of all a lot of it is not supposed to make perfect sense. We are traveling into uncharted territory. Benedict’s genome is unknown and we get to discover what exsists within his genome!

I know I’m excited and I know that the rest of the class is excited to start on this journey and discover what is within the genome!!!

After spending over an hour and a half in lab last week assembling a powerpoint and another hour and a half revising and practicing as a team, I can now say that our genome research team is the “best in the business”! I am excited to present our findings and can’t wait to hear what other groups have come up with!

I have very much forgotten to post on the blog. This has been a complicated and very confusing beginning to the semester and I have gotten a little behind on my blogging activity.

I’m thrilled to be back on the blog and filling everyone in with our lab progress.

Today, we are working in groups of 4 to compare all of our gene calls! This step is unbelievably interesting. Not only is it thrilling that all the genes in Benedict have been called, but now we are able to make important decisions on which genes actually exist.

This scientific opportunity is quite unique, simply because the gene calls we make will actually affect a small portion of the scientific community. The field of phage genomics is so small right now that our decisions will actually make a difference. I’m excited to continue with this project and can’t wait to keep discovering!

We are in the lab, trying to figure out the computer program… So far, no success.

Waiting for the pictures!

Super excited! Couldn’t wait to start taking my pictures…

Carrying our gel electrophoresis back to the lab. :)

Slightly embarrassing.

Most amazing imager, ever.
