I have a friend who is older and wiser and is very successful in business on the east coast. Several years ago he wrote me a letter telling me how valuable reading the Proverbs daily had become to him. He encouraged me to read one each day and every month I would read through the book. I did this for about a year. The insights that I gained were invaluable. I could see transactions occur that were just discussed in the chapter that I had read that day. I could see that wisdom and knowledge of the Lord was more important than the dollar that so many chase. It is refreshing to get back into the Proverbs.

FAQ: Which Proverb describes the attributes of a God fearing wife/woman (and a lucky man!…31).

Hey Canary, Prov. 13:11 is for your folks.

This post is a personal log of my latest questions arising from life experiences, it is long and not necessarily pertinent to class discussion:

As I was reading the book of Proverbs again, I began to think back upon my life. Currently, my family is financially doing well. However, I come from a meager background. My parents both have service jobs and have done nothing but manual labor their whole life: I remember times when my mom had only $10 to last her two weeks, until she got paid again. I remember when one year my parents built a fort for my army men as well as a dollhouse for my sister out of popsicle sticks because other gifts were too expensive.

Now I’m sitting in my own apartment with two nice guitars, a fancy laptop, a playstation 3, blurays, a large lcd tv, and a large dvd collection. Further, I have a truck, a refrigerator full of food, and two (small) bank accounts. Compared to the majority of the world I am rich and living like King Solomon himself! It makes me wonder, When did all this happen?

As an anthropology minor during my undergraduate work at OBU, I continuously heard the students from wealthy backgrounds saying that the free market is flawed fully and that it does only evil. It seems Well, my dad began to invest little by little, pay check to pay check and has been at his current job with the City of Newcastle Water Department for nearly 30 years. He and my mom are nearly 50, and after the majority of their lives they are finally able to put down the shovel, hammer, broom, and dust mop and enjoy themselves. They were prudent, patient, independent, and hard working. This system, which is flawed in many ways, helped my family out of poverty more than once.

Now, for the crux of my questions: As I was reading proverbs, I was thinking about the prostitute that draws young men aside. I think about Solomon saying to the young men, “Do not go that way! That way is the way of foolishness!” Perhaps it is for the young men, but what of the prostitute? Perhaps she is a young women who was kicked out of her parents house for drug use or bad behavior? Perhaps she is the 15 year old girl who cannot legally get a job, but who has no food or shelter? Perhaps she is the thirty year old homeless woman sitting by the vending machines at HEB who cannot get a real job because she has neither a permanent address, nor phone number, nor computer to write a resume? Proverbially, these women might seem to be the cause of the problem rather than the victim of an unjust system.

I cannot help but think of Jesus when the crowd drags the woman caught in adultery to him, seeking judgment and penalty. Jesus, looking down at her disheveled hair and tear stained face, may have remembered having dinner with her and the tax collectors only the night before? Maybe he knew her name; maybe they grew up playing together at the yearly festivals. The text does not say any of these things explicitly, nor does it say that she was a prostitute; but, one can speculate with little consequence. Maybe when Jesus stooped and wrote in the sand he wrote the title of caesar, the Savior of the World. Maybe Jesus is thinking, Where is caesar to save her? Where was Solomon to rescue the prostitute? Where is the help for the woman, sitting by the vending machines at HEB this cold night?

Like Psalms, It has been a very long tim since I have read Proverbs. What I noticed in this round is that there is not an explicit mention of the Davidic monarchy. I find this peculiar for two reasons: most of these proverbs are attributed to Solomon and they were compiled into the book probably after the exile.

Solomon, considered the wisest man to have ever lived on earth, made the pursuit of wisdom an extension of the government. The story goes that God offered him wealth, riches, long life, or whatever he desired; however, Solomon acting as a just king asks merely for wisdom to help rule his kingdom, which he inherited from his father. I always found it humorous that the Hebrew name for Solomon is transliterated as “Shlowmo”, and that does not sound to me like the name of a wise sage or descendent of the great king David.

Although the book was likely compiled after the exile, many of the proverbs range in dates from the pre-exilic period. The book itself is divided into multiple parts: Chapters 1-9 are a call to pursue wisdom; further, Wisdom herself is often personified and found making speeches. Chapters 10-29 is a full discourse of proverbs ranging from chapter 9, which is the beginning of the proverbs of Solomon proper; to chapter 25, which begins those proverbs of Solomon “that the officials of King Hezekiah of Judah copied” (Pr. 25.1). Chapters 30 and 31 have their own attributed authors: 30 are the “words of Agur, son of Jakeh” (30.1) and chapter 31 are the “words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him” (31.1).

Some good FAQ questions might concern these final two chapters, which are proverbs outside of Solomon: 1) What king received proverbs 31 as a lesson from his mother? (Lemuel)

2) Who is considered responsible for Proverbs 30? (Agur, son of Jakeh)

The Book of Proverbs doesn’t make for a awe-inspiring bedtime story but I like it…a lot. Its clever and “quipy”; like listening to the “not so random” random nuggets of truth from the wrinkled lips of your possibly senile granpa. Some of the things he says don’t make complete sense at first. He can see this quizzical look in your eyes but he just winks and says, “you’ll get it when you get home”. You want to ask him to elaborate but you probably would be better off ignorant of the seedy tale that lies behind his wisdom. It may reveal that Grandpa is not as sweet and feeble as his old body shows him to be. He has lived and lived to tell it.
Truth be told “If you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got” (Proverb brought to you by Mom’s Mabley) I love this piece of advice found in Prov. 4:7 that says, “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get Wisdom and whatever else you get, get insight. The idea of “getting wisdom” is curious to me. Wisdom seems come with life’s experience. It’s like going on a blind date with twin sisters, Wisdom and Folly. Which one will you pick? What man wouldn’t want the seductress who’s gonna give it up at the end of the night? I’m betting that grandpa has dated her more than a few times. Solomon (and friends) say to choose Wisdom, she is good to you and faithfully tried and true. That vixen Folly is just no good. I wonder if Solomon compares wisdom and folly to woman because of his involvement with women or because of his dad or both. I guess you wax poetically on what you know best. The whole Book sounds like an assortment of journal excerpts full of non-sequitors.. I like that…Unfortunately, I journal and write like that and it is the death of me when Dr. Jacober has her red-inked axe in hand.
PReGuNTaS
1. Is there more behind the idea of “the fear of the Lord” other than a reverent awe and respect?
2. Who are King Lemuel (and his mother) and Agur?
SoMe fAvs
“Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman without good sense “11:22~good one

“Those who till their land will have plenty of food, but those who follow worthless pursuits have no sense.” 12:11

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.” 13:12

“The field of the poor may yield much food but it is swept away through injustice.” 13:23

“By wisdom a house is built and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. “24:3&4 (Be nice if this was read before building the new Temple, or if our church planters and missionaries read this)

“Do not put yourself forward in the king’s presence or stand in the place of the great for it is better to be told, “Come up here,” than to be put lower in the presence of a noble.” 25:6-7

“Doing wrong is like a sport to a fool.” 10:23…never heard that before.

In reading Proverbs, I don’t see it as a do “X” to obtain “Y” for that would signify one’s ability to control or manipulate God. Yet, I see Proverbs as a guide for righteous living. Proverbs provides a steady compass which to guide one’s journey. Does every child that has been given righteous instruction grow up and follow the path? No, but many do return back to the foundation of God that was instilled in them as a child. Proverbs, filled with wisdom and understanding, shapes the mold of modern day common sense and thereby would benefit all to take notice. For I must admit, common sense does not appear to be that common.
