A modern day debate:
In Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society [ JETS 48/4 (December 2005) 715-32] Paul de Wagner writes that “the book of Proverbs is often brought into modern debate mainly because the book contains such strong disciplinary statements. Commentators sometimes face a dilemma of integrating the biblical text with modern conceptions of child discipline. Some scholars even go the to extreme of saying Proverbs is not the Word of God but of Solomon”. There is a tendency in us that when we come to statement like that we either support it or go against it. We take to our will and decide whether it is okay or not. Even though we believe in the inerrancy of the bible sometime it is hard for us to take this truth and act according to it. As as a parent who loves his/her child it is difficult to punish or discipline them. We either neglect those passages in the Bible which are problematic or do not act accordingly.
What is the Biblical Solution?
Prov 1:8-9, “Hear, my son, your father’s discipline (musar), and do not forsake your mother’s instruction , for they are a graceful wreath upon your head and ornaments around your neck.”
Prov 2:2-5, “Make your ear attentive to wisdom (hokmâ), and incline your heart to understanding (tëbûnâ); for if you cry for discernment
( bînâ) and lift up your voice for understanding, if you seek for her as for hidden treasures; then you will discern the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God.”
Paul de Wagner futher writes in “A Biblical Solution” [ JETS 48/4 (December 2005) 721-23], that “a wise parent encourages a child to see the benefits of proper behavior. When a child can actually see the benefits of proper behavior, it is logical that he or she would choose this behavior at least in some cases as Prov 3:13-15 and Prov 4:7-8: indicates.”
