I read Anne-Marie’s comments about her scepticism as regards new media in education. I thought her comparison to televsion was pertinent since there were all kind of comments when it came along about how much good it would do for education. We know that American Idiol ain’t education. Still, I would note a big difference. There is SO much stuff out there that there must be many good things. Thus my attitude is explore even though there may be many things that are not interesting or useful to me. Surely I can find things that fit me .

Digital Nation

I watched the Frontline PBS broadcast called “Digital Nation.” It was an interesting look at both what is being gained and what is being lost with our increasing use of digital devices. I was quite interested in the virtual reality games that some people have gotten deeply involved with though I doubt I will be doing any of this any time soon. Of the concerns one of the more significant I thought was the problem of multitasking. Interviews with MIT students showed that they were very confident they could handle shifting squickly from listening to reading emails and doing other things. But neuroscience research shows that people who do this do not think as well as people who concentrate on one thing for an extended time. There are limits to what one can do about this, I suppose, but one thought might be that with students we can at least share this information.
